Citi’s Asia-Pacific co-head of Banking, Capital Markets and Advisory, Jan Metzger, was recently appointed an honorary fellow at Cambridge University’s Judge Business School Centre for Financial Reporting and Accountability.
His appointment comes at a time when the finance profession, including financial reporting and accountability, is set to undergo considerable change with the advent of AI and adjacent technologies making available real-time data in driving decision-making of the future.
Given his background in computer science, Metzger is best known for his incisive views on technological innovation sweeping through all corners of business. His understanding of the technology space allows him to see the architecture beneath the surface of markets helping drive Citi’s investment banking business since he assumed the position a decade ago.
This year, the bank scored a number of marquee deals, including Alibaba’s US$3.2 billion offering of zero coupon convertible senior notes in September 2025 and more recently the IPO for UltraGreen.ai, a medical technology company, which raised US$400 million in December 2025, the first non-Reit ( real estate investment trust ) listing in Singapore since 2012.
Metzger studied computer science and artificial intelligence at a time when it wasn’t the buzz that it is today. In a podcast two years ago, he remembers: “I went and worked on the world's first commercial voice recognition system and poured my heart and soul into this thing. It was unfortunately, probably 25 years too early. The hardware wasn't powerful enough yet.”
He then worked as a management consultant helping multinationals improve their operations. In 2000, he started technology investment banking in Europe before moving to Asia in 2007 with Credit Suisse. In 2015, he joined Citi as co-head of technology investment banking before becoming head of investment banking in 2018.
In one of his periodic conversations with The Asset, he predicted that sometime in the future Hong Kong apartments will no longer come with a fully furnished kitchen – as everyone will be ordering in thanks to online food delivery. He also spoke about a driverless-car future with the prevalence of autonomous driving.
Metzger graduated from the University of Cambridge with a master of philosophy in economics. Prior to that, he received a bachelor degree ( double major in economics and computer science with artificial intelligence ) from University of Sussex.
